ABOUT MOROCCO


Morocco is a country situated in the North West of Africa, its coastline on the Atlantic reaches past the Strait of Gibraltar in to the Mediterranean; the south-east of Morocco is in the Sahara Desert, the Rif mountains in Morocco border the Mediterranean from the north-west to the north-east, the Atlas mountains run down the backbone of Morocco from south-west to north-east, the capital is Rabat, and the largest city is Casablanca, the official language in Morocco is Arabic and the population is in excess of 32.5 million.

The climate in Morocco is subtropical along the Mediterranean coast, temperatures being influenced by the ocean, temperatures in January average 16ēC while in the summer months the temperatures in Morocco average 23ēC, inland temperatures tend to be cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer, at high altitudes temperatures drop to around -17ēC with the mountain peaks in Morocco covered in snow for most of the year, rain fall tends to be heaviest in the winter months in the North and lighter in the East and South

The history of Morocco is reflected in its cuisine, many civilizations have passed through Morocco over the centuries and have left their mark, spices are widely used in many Moroccan dishes such as cumin, turmeric, ginger and pepper, the most popular choice of meat is chicken, although beef is widely eaten as is lamb, probably the most famous food traditionally eaten in Morocco is Couscous, bread is eaten with every meal and the midday meal is the main meal of the day and usually starts with a selection of hot and cold salads followed by a meat dish, Moroccans eat with their hands but use the bread as a utensil, a cup of sweet mint tea is served with most meals, desserts are not necessarily eaten after a meal in Morocco as they are in other Countries, fast food can be found in Marrakech, Bocadillo (or baguette) which is Spanish for sandwich is the most popular and usually filled with salad and meat, in the middle ages refugees from Baghdad came to Morocco bringing with them traditional recipes which are still used today, Moroccan cuisine also includes Turkish and Jewish dishes that have become common place in many restaurants and homes.

Morocco is becoming a popular destination for tourists with Marrakech being a hotspot, although not a very historical city, Marrakech has a great atmosphere with its street entertainers including acrobats, singers, dancers and even comedians, open air markets selling handcrafted goods such as rugs, jewelry, wood carvings and leather goods, there’s an abundance of places to eat and drink.

Morocco has a variety of activities on offer, trekking in the mountains is popular with organized walks, football, horse riding and camel rides being popular with most tourists in Morocco, fishing is available inland at one of the many beautiful lakes and rivers that Morocco has to offer, water sports include white water rafting and kayaking, skiing is also available in the Atlas Mountains from January to April.
